Born in 1573, Baynes studied at Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he came under the influence of the renowned Puritan scholar William Perkins. Baynes eventually succeeded Perkins as lecturer at St. Andrew’s Church in Cambridge, placing him at the heart of one of the most important centers of Puritan thought. His ministry emphasized the sovereignty of God, salvation by grace alone, and the necessity of practical godliness in everyday life.
